Hi there, I’m Rosa

Born in Lisbon, raised in Macau, and now living in Rotterdam, I’ve spent the last 15 years of my professional life helping people communicate effectively across languages and cultures.

I work as a content designer and researcher. This means I get to spend my day thinking about, researching, and fixing problems with language and data. Some of my recent and/or ongoing work includes collaborations with Transfer Galaxy, Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab (RASL) and V2_, Lab for the Unstable Media.

I’m especially drawn to the themes of care, compassion, and social justice. I spend a lot of time thinking about deathcare and how, through design and community knowledge and action, we can demand and build better systems of care.

Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky to work on the themes that interest me in one way or another. I’ve worn many professional hats: lecturer in International Studies at Leiden University, researcher on marginal literatures at Yale University, ethnographic researcher working on migration at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, China-focused consultant at Edeluc, and editor and translator for 30+ clients across the world. I also co-founded CasaTrigoso, a family-run vacation rental business in sunny southern Portugal.

And now, some things you may be wondering about:

  • What’s Macau? Wikipedia has some answers. I’ve also written about it a little bit.

  • What’s deathcare? Actually, most people might call this end-of-life care, but I’m consciously trying to not avoid the terms death and dying. Part of what I’m drawn to in this work is to challenge our difficulty in talking about death and grief.
